Advice & Tips
- Why writing is important. Writing helps to reinforce language learning by using active recall to practice applying the vocabulary words, grammar rules, and sentence structures you’ve already learned.
- Read, read, read.Reading is the best way to learn grammar rules, sentence structures, and new vocabulary words.
- When first starting out, you should focus on having correct sentences, good grammar, and knowing the rules of the language. Intermediate and advanced learners should focus on more complex subject matters like writing short stories, writing formally (like emails), etc.
- Write down your thoughts throughout the day. It doesn't matter the amount of time you take as long as you're writing. You can also practice using prompts if you can't think of a topic to write about. Click here for some writing prompts.
- Beginners should start off learning basic vocabulary, sentence structures, grammar, and conjugations first. After they are comfortable with the basics, they can move on to writing longer paragraphs and sentences. Worksheets are a great way to work on this! - Get corrections on your writing. There's no point in writing in your target language if you don't even know whether your writing is grammatically correct. LangCorrect is a great app and website (that is free) for all users (for up to 2 languages).
- Make sure to write using your target language (TL) instead of translating from your native language to your TL. Not everything can be directly translated from your native language to your TL. When you sit down to write, keep in mind that sentence structures, phrases, etc, might not be the same in other languages. This information is from Pomona.edu.
